I realize it’s still early, but with the college bowl games in full swing I thought it was time to take my first look at the upcoming NFL Draft in April. Keep in mind, this will change a million times between now and April, but it’s always fun to play around with these players before they get to the Combine and Senior Days. Also keep in mind I’m not putting these players with teams yet because we still have one week to go in the regular season and we also have the playoffs to deal with. I’m simply going to offer up the top 32 players that will enter the Draft and in what position I expect them to go.
1. St. Louis Rams — Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska — This dude should be the clear-cut #1 player taken off the board, but teams have been known to be desperate for a franchise QB and often times reach.
2. Detroit Lions — Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma — Not quite as good as Suh, but may actually be faster than Suh and took on just as many double teams throughout the year. He’s an absolute stud who will pay immediate dividends to whoever drafts him.
3. Tampa Bay Bucs — Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State — Wow, the top 3 picks from the Big 12. Okung is, at the moment, the best offensive lineman in the draft, but that could change. Others aren’t far behind. This guy will start right away next season.
4. Washington Redskins — Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma — Let’s be honest, he’s head-and-shoulders better than Jimmy Clausen but he’s not being talked about as much because he didn’t play at Notre Dame. Can he prove to scouts he can stay healthy? I think he can.
5. Kansas City Chiefs — Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland — The Chiefs’ biggest area of concern is likely offensive line, especially now that they’ve apparently found a franchise RB. Campbell is a very athletic OT who can likely come in and start right away.
6. Seattle Seahawks — Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame — In my initial mock draft I had Eric Berry in this spot, but now with Seattle having the 6th overall pick I have to believe they are going after a franchise QB.
7. Cleveland Browns — Eric Berry, S, Tennessee — One of the best athletes in the country, Berry will pay immediate dividends to a Browns secondary that needs a lot of help. They might also go with Florida CB Joe Haden here, but Berry is a better overall athlete and could eventually play cover corner.
8. CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson — Did you happen to watch the Music City Bowl? Spiller is dynamic in so many ways… I-formation, Wildcat, special teams, etc. Whoever gets this guy will absolutely use him right away.
9. Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas — Okay, this might be my first “reach” of the top 10, but 6′ 7″ QBs don’t come along too often, especially ones that can throw it 70 yards flat-footed and can tuck it away and run (though he’s not considered a running QB by any stretch). Mallett may end up being the best QB of the bunch when all is said and done.
10. Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa — Why do you think the Iowa running game has been so successful the past few years? Bulaga has been a staple along that offensive line for the past couple years and should be able to make a simple transition from the college game to the pros.

On your #9 pick – “throw it 70 yards flat-footed and can tuck it away and run.” Have you watched this guy play at all? He clearly can not tuck it away and run. I think I would edit this out.
He’s not the most fleet of foot, I agree, but I have seen several Arkansas games and even some Michigan games when he was there… he wasn’t afraid to “tuck it and run”. And I hope you’re not questioning his arm strength… he’s got a cannon. However, I will edit the running part for clarification.
I like the pick because “IF” Mallett declares for the draft, he’s a bona-fied 1st round grade IMO. Like you said Craig; “the kid can throw 70 yards flat-footed” and NFL arms like that don’t come around every year.
Mark my words…. the Raiders are a VERY strong possibility here.
Great stuff Craig!
Well, if the season shakes out the way it does, the Browns would have the 4th pick and there’s no way in hell I’d take a QB at 4th, yet alone Bradford. At the 4th pick, the Browns have to either go offensive line or help in stopping the run. I’d like the Browns to take Okung 4th or Eric Berry at 4th. I think Berry is right behind Suh as far as best prospect in the draft and there’s no one currently on the Browns that has as much talent as Berry, IMO….
Granted Bradford would need some weapons to throw to in Cleveland, but I don’t really think there would be a better situation anywhere with a solid O-line already in place to go with Bradford’s pinpoint accuracy. They could try and add a few playmakers on offense and utilize an NFL spread style offense with Sam and I think he would be really successful.
With as many top QB’s available in this draft, I would think a lot of teams wuill pass to the later rounds at that position
Craig – not questioning his arm strength at all. I have seen him play every game this year as I am a huge razorback fan. He will pull it down and run, he just wont go far.
Good point… you could be absolutely right
That’s why I love the NFL Draft talk in December
LOL… I see what you’re saying John. I should have worded it differently from the beginning.
Good stuff Craig, I am already looking to the draft. I like Berry alot and could be the second overall pick, depending on which team ends up in that spot.
My opinion on the shining light to the draft board is that it’s going to be good drafting year.
Craig do you see Tim Tebow going in rd one? Living here in J-Ville its a buzz that the thing to do here. Take Timmy in the first rd! Thoughts?
I honestly don’t see him going in the first round unless someone really believes he can be a QB at the next level. My gut says he can’t, but I could be dead wrong. I never thought Akili Smith, Tim Couch or Ryan Leaf would be good NFL QBs and I was dead on. But I also said Donovan McNabb would never make it in the NFL too… DOH!!! First round is tough for me to see right now.
CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson, is he the real deal? Or do you see someone else better?
What about wr? I love the kid from Cinn. wr Mardy Gilyard. Also am very high on Dexter McCluskey from Ole’ Miss. Your thoughts?
Gilyard is definitely the real deal, no question. Size and speed and great hands. Just watch him against Florida next week. As for McCluster (sp?), he might be a bit small. I know, they said that about DeSean Jackson and he has turned out fine, but I don’t think he’s in Jackson’s class either. That’s a tough call.
Spiller is dynamic because he can do so many things. Special teams, catch passes, block, and run like the wind.
