Scoring & Yardage Tool

Dec 20 2008, 11:00 AM

UPDATED 12/18

ATTENTION... YOU'LL NOW NOTICE A NEW FORMAT FOR THE YARDAGE/SCORING TOOL. THANKS TO OUR GOOD FRIEND ROBERT COBB, WE NOW HAVE A WEB-BASED VERSION OF THIS TOOL THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO VIEW ALL THE PERTINENT INFORMATION "BY POSITION" WITH ONE SIMPLE CLICK OF THE MOUSE. NO MORE EXCEL SPREADSHEETS!!

PLUS, IF YOU HAVE A PLATINUM MEMBERSHIP, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO USE YOUR LEAGUE SCORING FORMAT(S) TO SEE THE FANTASY POINTS ALLOWED AS THEY PERTAIN TO YOUR LEAGUES. NOT TO MENTION... A NIFTY LITTLE "LAST THREE WEEKS" FEATURE. ENJOY.

CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATED, 2008 YARDAGE/SCORING TOOL

Over the years I've grown tired of hearing, "this defense is ranked 23rd against the pass" or "this defense ranks 5th against the run". Why? Because those rankings are derived from yardage only. Plus, it takes yardage as a whole, regardless of which position player is responsible for the actual yardage. Quite frankly, I don't think that's a very good indication of how a particular defense performs in a fantasy sense. It doesn't take into account what a defense does against, say, opposing WRs.

You see a defense ranked #10 against the pass and assume they're pretty tough... forcing you to look elsewhere when considering which WR to start. What you didn't know was that of the 202 passing YPG they are yielding, 165 of that was to WRs every week. That's huge! What that tells me is that this particular defense is very good against tight ends and RBs, but does allow a good amount of yardage to the wideouts. So you don't necessarily have to be so concerned about starting your WR against that defense.

Another thing that bothers me about the "defensive rankings" is that they dont' take into account TDs scored. For quite some time Denver's defense showed very good against passing yardage but was allowing two TDs through the air per game. If someone was to bench a WR because the Broncos had the "2nd best pass defense" in the league, they'd be kicking themselves after they missed a TD from the WR they benched.

Bottom line: There's more to passing and rushing defenses than generic yardage... and I'm here to bring it to you. Not only will you see how much yardage, per position, each defense is allowing, you'll also see a game-by-game breakdown and an average number of yards and TDs for each of the 32 teams in the NFL. Enjoy.

Crud... sry fellas. I hate Zip files anyhow. I'm going to see if I can't get Robert to put this tool in web-based format. If you'd like, email me at craig@fantasyfootball.com and I'll email you the file directly until we can get this resolved.

This is an awesome breakdown!  You can't get a better picture of a defense's performance than this.

One minor point on the new format: When viewing YTD, the Defenses are ranked from fewest points against (1) to most points against (32) - ie, worst matchup to best.

However, in the last 3 week view, they are ranked from most points against (1) to fewest points against - ie, best matchup to worst.

The ranking method should be consistent for whichever view is selected.

On edit- clicking the column again does resequence the data, so that can be used as a workaround.

Good catch!  The tool has been changed so that the sort order is fewest points given up to most by default for each column.  As you mentioned, sorting by a column a second time will invert the order.

This new web-based version may be easier to read but it's far less effective than the excel spreadsheet, and is now far too similar to those available on other fantasy sites.

The best feature that used to set this tool apart from the others was having an at-a-glance look at the weekly team-by-team breakdown of stats. The "last three weeks" may show a trend, but without knowing what teams they played makes it much less relevant.  For instance, a team could appear to be playing great against the run over the past three weeks... but if you knew they played (for example) Cincinnati, Detroit and Arizona, you'd realize that's not necessarily a good analysis.

A specific example of this during this year's season is that the Patriots appeared to be weak against the run, ranking near the bottom.  However, the weekly team-by-team breakdown presented the 216 rushing yards Miami handed them in week 3 (when the wildcat formation was revealed).  If you ignore that one game, they've held everyone else to less than 100 yds/game. (okay, week 1 they allowed 102 yds)

I still love this site, and still consider it the best, but I'm extremely disappointed that the excel version of this tool isn't available anymore.  Now it's back to spending hours studying the stats on NFL.com

Weekly break-down is under development and should be included soon.

EDIT:  Weekly break-down was made available in week 12.  Just click on the team name to view their week-by-week fantasy points and stats yielded.

Sorry for the late notice this week, AL.  I update the data Tuesday nights and update the page to note 'Data updated through 2008 week X'.  So, if you're wondering if the data has been updated, you can trust that header.
